High praise as Dudley in national spotlight for dementia care

Dudley’s pioneering approach to dementia care is finding favour with the Department of Health.

Wow! Non other than the department’s director general of social care, local government and care partnerships, Jon Rouse, has visited the borough to see for himself the care model.

Mr Rouse spent his time at the Roseville Centre in Coseley – a dementia gateway – where he chatted to staff.

Reported in the local media, the DofH health chief spoke with staff, sufferers and carers during the trip. He also dropped off at the Queens Cross Centre where work is centered on those with learning disabilities, those who have physical and sensory challenges.

Councillor David Branwood, the borough’s cabinet member for adult, community and housing services, was understandably rich with his praise of the dementia services.

In the Stourbridge News he was reported as saying the pioneering approach is about “giving people independence in their communities” and giving them the correct levels of support.

The model for dementia care is something the WMCA is proud to be involved with. In the grand scale of things we are a small cog in a huge machine, but nonetheless, it’s a privilege to deliver training in this critical area of need.

I know only too well the rigours of caring for those with this awful degenerative condition. Personalised and tailored care is the key to providing life quality for sufferers and their families.

Our local authorities are often pilloried for ‘not doing’. On this occasion all praise goes to Dudley for coming into the national spotlight for their work.
